So what do you know about listening, and I mean really listening to God?
I'm learning two things... it helps if you DESIRE it. You can read and pray all day, but unless you are expecting to hear God speak to you, you won't hear it.
And second... you have to say YES to what you are hearing. If he's calling you to change, confess, give... if you don't do it, it seems to clog the pipes of communication. He needs you to say YES so he can say more.
That is my 2 cents. And seriously, that is all that I know.

Listening for God leaves us very vulnerable. We feel we'd be on safer ground if He'd do this one fleshly....speak to us verbally/vocally in English. Interpreting God's talk takes discernment. It's easier to simply take the safe position of, "He makes no comments nowadays." However, He does commune with His people. We pray expecting to hear from Him.
"But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good from evil." Hebr. 5:14
Why train to discern? Because something "readable" is going on in the air...from God...and we are called to note it.
And, Tim, that's more than I know.
Tim, that reminds me of one of my favorite books, Mutant Message Down Under. It is about an American doctor who goes on a walkabout with a tribe of aborigines. The tribal elder tells her about the difference between their prayer and her prayer. He says that the "mutants" (westerners) pray by talking to God, but when the aborigines pray they listen to God. I thought it was very profound, and it made quite an impression on me.
Sarah, love the aborigines idea. I wish I could do that better.
