Proverbs 1
v.7 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”
Perhaps this is going to make for an awfully weak beginning to this blogging month, but I want to begin with a simple question. What is it about the fear of the Lord that makes it the beginning of knowledge?

This is a great proverb to start on. The whole book of Proverbs starts here. God gifted Solomon with wisdom at Solomon's request. So where do you start in your quest for wisdom? The second part of verse 7 helps us understand the first part...
Fools despise wisdom and instruction....
I don't think Solomon is talking about a trembling, shaking in your boots fear. He's talking about a healthy respect for who God is and who we are before Him. He is the creator, we are the created. Once we grasp that concept, then we can humbly look to God for instruction and wisdom. A created being that rejects the creator's wisdom and instruction is a fool. The creator knows best... This is best exemplified in Job.
You are good Tim. Keep loving.
Hey Jason, so nice hearing from you. I like what you had to say. I think the "humbly look" is right. The beginning of wisdom is the beginning of the journey.
Here I am... always a day late & a dollar short, but I'm here!
First of all, thanks for this series, Tim. Proverbs addresses some weak areas in my life, so I have shied away in order to avoid some things God may require of me... Looks like He's using you as His ambassador to help me bring some things to light! Sneaky!
Coming to a proper understanding of the fear of the Lord seems to be the biggest help for me to get this verse. I soooo agree with Jason's words (Hi Jason!!!)... Respect is the word I associate with this fear.
When I think about the people I respect in life... I have gotten a glimpse of their core being (character, nature, heart) and can't help but hold them in high esteem. And that seems to translate to God as well... Each time I get a glimpse of Him - whether through creation, the scriptures, the life of Jesus Christ or how His Holy Spirit works in my conscience - I can't help but be in awe of Him. I don't wanna despise the wisdom and discipline of a God like that...
But boy howdy have we capitalized on the terror part of fear in times past! With our hell fire and brimstone sermons concluded with a lively chorus of "many will meet their doom!" There's a place for that... but I'm not so sure God craves it as the main motivation for turning a heart toward Him.
Rather than scaring the hell out of people, I've found they respond better to the other side of the coin... a healthy and holy fear of the greatness of God! The great I Am! Being the perfect balance of justice and mercy... that's a God I can get on board with.
FEAR - It's not just for the damned!
Angie, it makes me think of Bob. I think I had a holy fear of him. I didn't think he was going to smote me. But I respected him so greatly, I didn't want to do anything that would upset him. I remember getting called into his office and I was so scared. Again, not that he would wipe me off the face of the earth, but it was as if I was afraid to see myself through his eyes, cause I trusted his judgment as true.
