Proverbs 21:13

“If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.”

If you’ve been reading along, you’ve probably noticed a theme Solomon seems to come back to a lot: Care for the poor. Protect the down trodden.

I don’t want to get into a debate on what our government should or should not do regarding the poor. What I would like us to do is question our own ears. Have they closed to the cries of the poor?

This is something that I really need to grow in...BIG. I would like to kid myself into thinking that I have not turned my ears off to the poor. My excuse is that I have heard the call of those who are void of Jesus in their life and are therefore poor spiritually. What a joke -- it runs so much deeper than that. I don't guess I have to tell you what it's like to be around lots of poor people -- I would imagine Guadalajara is much like Mexico City in that respect. The thing that really bothers me about this isn't only the fact that I turn my ears off, it's the ease I seem to have in becoming desensitized to the poor -- how quickly I can adjust to having them there and just walk past them in the street without flinching. What a rebuke.

Jesus gave to all regardless of their circumstance. I need that spirit. Thanks for the challenge.

Shaner,

I really go up and down with this in Mexico. Sometimes I'm really touched by the poverty and at other times I'm so put out with the beggers on every corner. I find it so hard to know what Jesus would do in some circumstances.

And I'll say it again... that Samantha is a cutie! HUGE congrats to you and Hope.

It's funny you should say that because I got to thinking after I wrote before and I wonder if the reason I so easily pass people by is because the large number of beggars or poor make it so hard to know who really needs help. I have always prayed for opportunities to give and they have always been there, even in Lázaro. I wonder if I should stop praying only for opportunities and start praying for wisdom and guidance to see who really needs the help.

Glad you had fun in Lázaro! Also glad to hear that no killer stingrays got you either. I stepped on one once -- not very fun! And I think Sam's pretty cute too! Thanks.

Man, so much fun! You have a great team down there. Though I don't envy the climate. Too hot! Way too hot. Tonight, I really enjoyed taking a shower and not sweating right after... or during.
