Proverbs 30:5

“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”

Let’s see, what else have I tried to take refuge in? Looks and athletic ability? Those were squashed pretty quickly. (Dusty, I don’t need any comments from you on this one. You’re suspended until I’m over your trip to the World Series.) Degrees? You really can’t do anything with a History or Communication Studies degree. People I know? Name dropping only sounds good to the dropper. No one else is impressed. And the most remarkable… I’ve taken refuge in what I know about what God has said. (understand: my knowledge of Bible facts) But notice, it doesn’t say his words are the shield, it says, HE is the shield. I might be splitting hairs here. But I think this is important. Jesus, at one point, gets after the Pharisees saying they take pride in their knowledge of the scriptures but are still missing out on life… his life that he is offering, standing right there in front of them.

Does anyone see the difference? If so, care to take a shot at explaining it a little better?

One time in Lubbock Jason and I were under intense discouragement from a very personal rejection we faced. It caused much insecurity in both of us... the kind you wake up and feel sick to your stomach about..and again 20 times throughout the day.
One night, knowing we couldn't continue as we had been, and being assured that the relationship was not going to change at that time, we sat down and made a list of all the things we had in our relationship with God. The rejection hurt so deeply.. it was mechanical at first... starting with promises we knew God made to us that we could trust in. But we put that list on the refrigerator, and day after day, those words and promises began to bring life to both of us - not because they were 'optimistic', but because we knew the reality of the One who spoke them and His faithfulness that overshadowed the hurt we felt.
On the opposite end... I can totally think times that I put more confidence in "words of God" rather than in God Himself. For all I thought I knew of His word
- I found myself troubled when I realized my relationship *with* Him was challengeing what I thought I already knew *about* Him.
I think you make a wise point and distinction here.
Love you guys!

"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds." II Cor 10:3-4 Jeff and I were talking about this verse one time. We were coming up with all the divine powers we could think of; God as our sheild was not one we listed. This verse in Proverbs is a great. God is our shield! I want to take refuge in him. That is one comforting divine power.

I think words and promises are only as good as the people who speak them. We know that God's words and promises are flawless because He always keeps His word and fulfills His promises.

His words are flawless because He is flawless. God is our shield.

What a great scripture!

Heather, that is so weird to read about. I can't imagine anyone rejecting you and Jason... unless it's picking sides for basketball, cause we all know his knee just isn't going to hold. But I know what you mean about things starting out mechanical. That reminds me of something I just read about thankfulness. But that's for another blog.

Amy G, reminds me of the verse, "If God is for us..." If he is our sheild, what can anyone ever do or say?

Shaner, Billy Sims BBQ huh? I think I'm going to have to check that out. Sweet!

Also, just read the verse I mentioned in the post. John 5:39-40: "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
